May 5, 2015, the Microsoft Surface 3 was released. It was created as a more affordable option than the Surface Pro 3.  The Surface 3 came out for people that didn’t need the performance and power of the Surface Pro 3. The Surface 3 was a close competitor to a regular tablet like the IPad.  The Surface 3 comes with a full desk-top OS instead of the mobile version, that you find on other tablets.

The Surface 3 and The Surface Pro 3 are very similar in design made of magnesium alloy giving the units a matte gray look to the back of  them. The Surface 3 and Pro 3 can now be set to 3 different angles 22, 44, and 60 degrees with the built in kickstand.

(Surface 3)

The Surface 3 weighs about 1.4 pounds and features a 10.8 inch diagonal multi-touch display with a 3:2 aspect ratio. For charging the Surface 3 uses a micro USB this gives the user a variety of charging options, like they could use a regular phone charger.

The Surface 3 has a quad core Intel atom processor that will support 4K resolution. The Surface 3 comes in 64GB or 128GB internal storage, and 2GB or 4GB of RAM. You can increase the storage of the device by adding a memory card in the micro SD slot.

The operating system that comes with The Surface 3 is Windows 8.1 but can be upgraded to Windows 10. After July 2015, the Surface 3 comes with Windows 10 Home, the business models come with Windows 10 Pro.

With the Surface 3 you can use the Surface Pen as well as the attachable keyboard but neither of these items come with the Surface 3. You can buy them separately.

June 20, 2015, was the release date for the Surface Pro 3, the Pro 3 is the faster and more powerful  model of the Surface 3.

The Pro 3 is made of magnesium alloy giving the unit a matte gray look to the back of it. The Surface Pro 3 can now be set to 3 different angles 22, 44, and 60 degrees same as the Surface 3. They changed the charging port for the Pro 3 to a magnetized connection so it stays securely to the charger.

Microsoft, Surface Pro, Computers, Tablets
(Surface Pro 3)

The Surface Pro 3 has a larger 12 inch screen, the screen has a 3.2 aspect ratio this makes viewing it more comfortably when using it in portrait position. With the Surface Pro 3 the touch screen digitizer and the pen digitizer are combined into one single layer so the screen is thinner than in previous models, this was done to improve the viewing angles.

The Surface Pro 3 originally came with Windows 8.1, but it can be updated to Windows 10. Ever  since Windows 10 was released all the Surface Pro 3’s come with Windows 10 installed on them.

Surface Pro 3 is the first Surface to add an improved pen the pen comes with the unit. The Surface Pen for the Pro 3 features N-trig DuoSense technology with 256 levels of pressure sensitivity. The pen works great with this Tablet it’s almost like writing on paper.

There is also a new type cover it’s thinner, has back lit keys, and an improved touch pad.

This is the Surface Pro that I presently own, it works great for everything that I do. I have replaced my laptop with this unit and I couldn’t be happier. The One Note app. is one of my favorite, being able to write notes anywhere, and not having to be on-line while using it is great.

June 15, 2017, was the release date for the Surface Pro 2017. The difference between the Pro 4 and the 2017 model is all about the inside. (the processor) The difference to the outside is the kickstand it now opens to 165 degrees it allows it to lay flatter this is what Microsoft calls the Studio Mode.

Microsoft, Surface Pro, Computers, Tablets
(Surface Pro 2017)

All the Surface Pro 2017 models come with 7th-generation Intel Kaby Lake Core processors – m3, i5, or i7. RAM options available are 4 GB, 8 GB, 16 GB and SSD options are 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, 1024 GB, these are the same tiers that were available with the Pro 4. All Surface Pro 2017, models come with a 64-bit version of Windows 10 Pro. They also all have Windows Hello compatible camera. It combines the use of a regular and infrared camera to authenticate the user. (Great for security)

Microsoft also introduced a new line of type covers and they are available in 4 different colors. They also came out with an updated version of the Surface Pen it has 4,096 levels of pressure and tilt support. Microsoft claims it is the Fastest Pen In The World… It only has 21 milliseconds of latency.

Microsoft does not include the New Surface Pen with the Surface Pro 2017, they did make the Surface Pro 2017 backward-compatible with all accessories. Also, they made the new Surface Pen and the new Type Covers backward-compatible with the Surface Pro 3 and the Pro 4.

I hope this breaks down the difference between the Microsoft Surface Family and give you the confidence to buy the Microsoft Surface that is right for you. I recommend that you don’t go lower than the Surface Pro 3 but after you read through this you will be able to make your own choice.
